About Port Union

Located on the rugged shores of Trinity Bay, Port Union is a small community making a big effort to restore its heritage buildings and celebrate its unique contribution to the history of Newfoundland.

The only "union-built town" in North America, Port Union was created in a flurry of construction starting in 1916. It was to be William Ford Coaker and the members of the Fishermen's Protective Union's "capital" as they built a new type of commercial and economic footing for Newfoundland's fishermen.

A visit to Historic Port Union can include:

  • a tour of the restored Factory building, with its period woodworking machinery and the array of presses and equipment used by the union paper, The Fishermen's Advocate (opens in May)
  • perusal of selected back issues of the Advocate, which began publishing in 1910
  • a walking tour of the town site, with interpretive panels that tell parts of the Port Union story
  • day hikes along the beautiful coastline
  • special events celebrating the season and the region's history (see Calendar of Events)

Port Union's community spirit is still very much alive, as residents work to preserve their built heritage and bring their history to life. Come, join us.
